1. What is the ruling on past prayers if a mosque was found to deviate slightly from the qiblah?

  • The past prayers are valid, but the rows should be corrected for future prayers. (correct answer)

Why

For those far from the Ka‘bah, the requirement is to face its direction, not necessarily the exact physical structure. A slight deviation from the qiblah does not invalidate past prayers, especially when people were trying to face the proper direction. However, once the correct direction is known, the mosque rows should be corrected and people should not deliberately continue deviating from the qiblah. Putting a line or other marker to show the proper direction is recommended.

2. What should someone do if he tried to find the qiblah, prayed, and later discovered he was mistaken?

  • He does not have to repeat the prayer. (correct answer)
  • He must repeat the prayer in every case.
  • His prayer is invalid because facing the qiblah is always waived for the ignorant.
  • He should stop praying until he is completely certain.

Why

A person must try to face the qiblah. If he does his best to work out the correct direction and later discovers that he was wrong, he does not have to repeat the prayer. This is not because the duty to face the qiblah is waived for him, but because he fulfilled what he was able to do. If he discovers the correct direction during the prayer, he should turn toward it and continue praying.

3. What happens if a person prays calmly but his mind sometimes wanders?

  • His prayer remains valid, but he is rewarded only for the parts in which he was focused. (correct answer)
  • His prayer is invalid and must always be repeated.
  • He receives full reward even if he had no focus.
  • He should stop praying until he can guarantee perfect concentration.

Why

Khushu‘ means humility, focus, and calmness in prayer. If a person prays in a calm and unhurried manner but sometimes his mind wanders, his prayer is still valid. However, he loses the reward for the parts in which he was not focused. If a person prays so hastily that he does not perform the postures calmly, then that lack of tuma’ninah may invalidate the prayer, as shown by the hadith of the man who was told to repeat his prayer.
