This privacy policy explains how we handle data across all platforms. Our commitment is to provide a safe space for Islamic learning and reflection with minimal data collection.

What Information We Collect

Personal Information: We do not require accounts and do not collect personal information like your name, email address, or precise location. Any questions or search queries you enter are processed to find relevant Islamic content and are never saved permanently.

Analytics

We use privacy-focused, cookieless analytics (Google Analytics in consent mode) to understand general usage trends, such as which pages are most visited. This data is completely anonymized and cannot identify individual users. No cookies are set for tracking or advertising purposes.

Mobile App Privacy: IlmPath (iOS & Android)

Our Privacy-First Approach

The IlmPath mobile app (published by Islam Guidance) is designed with privacy at its core:

  • All core features work offline
  • No user tracking or behavioral analytics
  • No advertising networks or trackers
  • Location data never leaves your device
  • Prayer times and Qibla direction calculated locally on your device
  • No user accounts or registration required
  • No in-app purchases or subscriptions

No User Accounts

IlmPath does not create, require, or support user accounts of any kind. There is no registration, login, email/password, or social sign-in. Because no user accounts exist, there is no account data to delete. All app data (preferences, favorites, bookmarks, dhikr counts, prayer tracking, quiz progress) is stored locally on your device only and is automatically deleted when you uninstall the app. Since no accounts exist, no "account deletion" feature is needed or applicable.

Data Stored On Your Device

Location Data (Encrypted)

Your location coordinates are stored exclusively on your device using platform-specific encrypted storage (iOS Keychain / Android Keystore). This data is never transmitted to our servers or any third party. It is used solely for calculating prayer times and Qibla direction locally on your device.

App Preferences and User Data

Your settings (prayer calculation method, notification preferences, theme choices, Quran reciter selection, etc.), as well as your favorites, bookmarks, reading history, dhikr counts, prayer tracking, and quiz progress are all stored locally on your device and never leave it.

Downloaded Content

Any Quran audio files you download are stored on your device for offline listening and can be deleted at any time.

Minimal Data Transmitted

We only transmit data when absolutely necessary for core features. All transmissions use HTTPS encryption:

Timezone Information

When fetching daily guidance (Quran verses and Hadith), we send only your device timezone (e.g., "America/New_York") to provide date-appropriate Islamic content. No location coordinates, IP address, or identifying information is sent.

Search Queries (Smart Search Only)

When you use the Smart Search feature (Ask tab) in IlmPath, your search text is sent to our server (islamguidance.info) to return relevant results from the Quran and Hadith collections. No personal information, device identifiers, or location data is included with this query. Search queries are not logged or stored on our servers.

Note: All other search functions within IlmPath (Quran search, Hadith search, Dua search) are performed entirely on your device using local databases. Your search text for these features is never transmitted.

What We Don't Do

To protect your privacy, we will NOT:

  • Collect or store your location coordinates on our servers
  • Track your app usage or behavior
  • Use analytics or tracking tools (e.g., Google Analytics, Firebase Analytics)
  • Display advertisements or use ad networks
  • Sell or share your data with third parties
  • Create user profiles or accounts
  • Require login or registration

Data Security

We implement industry-standard security measures:

  • Encrypted Storage: Location data stored using iOS Keychain and Android Keystore
  • HTTPS: All network requests use encrypted connections
  • Input Validation: Contact form protected against malicious input
  • Local Processing: Prayer times and Qibla calculated on-device

Third-Party Services (IlmPath Mobile App)

IlmPath uses minimal third-party services:

  • Expo: Cross-platform app framework (no user tracking)
  • islamguidance.info (Our Server): Provides daily guidance content (receives only timezone) and Smart Search results (receives only search query text)
  • Quran Audio CDN: Streams and downloads Quran recitation audio files. Only the requested audio file URL is sent; no personal data is transmitted.

We do NOT use:

  • Google Analytics or Firebase Analytics
  • Facebook SDK or Meta tracking
  • Ad networks (AdMob, etc.)
  • Crash reporting services that collect personal data

Permissions We Request (IlmPath)

  • Location: Required for accurate prayer times and Qibla direction calculations. Data stays on your device.
  • Notifications: Optional. Used to send prayer time reminders, prayer ending alerts, and daily Islamic reminders (morning guidance, Friday Surah Al-Kahf, nightly Surah Al-Mulk). You can enable or disable each reminder individually within the app.
  • Motion/Compass: Optional. Used for the Qibla compass to determine the direction to Makkah. This data is processed locally and never transmitted.
  • Network: To fetch daily guidance content, Smart Search results, quiz content, and Quran audio streaming.
  • Storage: To store downloaded Quran audio files for offline listening. You can manage and delete downloads within the app.

Your Control Over Data

IlmPath Mobile App

Because your data remains on your device, you have full control:

  • You can review or clear your saved location at any time within the app
  • You can manage and delete downloaded Quran audio files within the app (Profile > Audio Downloads)
  • You can clear your favorites, reading history, and dhikr counts at any time
  • You can disable Location, Notification, or Motion permissions through your device settings (Note: this will limit app functionality)
  • No account to delete: Since IlmPath has no user accounts, there is no account deletion mechanism needed. All data is local to your device.
  • Uninstalling IlmPath automatically deletes all locally stored data, including preferences, favorites, downloads, and cached content

Website

Since we don't collect or store personal data from the website, there is no data for you to request or delete. Your searches and interactions are not logged.

Children's Privacy

Our services are suitable for all ages and contain appropriate Islamic educational content. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. Since we do not create user accounts or collect personal data, we do not store information from users of any age. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, please contact us.

Data Retention

  • IlmPath Mobile App: All data stored by IlmPath is held exclusively on your device. We do not retain any personal data on our servers. Smart Search queries are processed in real time and are not logged or stored. Uninstalling IlmPath automatically deletes all locally stored data.
  • Website: We do not retain personal data. Search queries and interactions are not stored.

International Users

Islam Guidance and IlmPath serve users worldwide. Our servers are located in the United States. By using our services, you consent to the transfer of your minimal data (timezone for daily guidance, search query text for Smart Search) to the United States. We maintain the same privacy protections regardless of your location.

European Users (GDPR Compliance)

If you are located in the European Economic Area (EEA), the United Kingdom, or Switzerland, you have additional rights under the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). This section supplements the rest of our privacy policy.

Legal Basis for Processing

We process the minimal data described in this policy based on the following legal grounds:

  • Legitimate Interest (Article 6(1)(f)): Anonymous, cookieless analytics to understand general usage trends and improve our services. We have balanced this against your privacy rights and determined the impact is minimal given the anonymous, cookieless nature of the data. No personal data is collected or processed for analytics.
  • Contract Performance (Article 6(1)(b)): Processing your timezone or search query to deliver the service you requested (daily guidance or Smart Search results).

Your Rights Under GDPR

You have the following rights regarding your personal data:

  • Right of Access (Article 15): You may request a copy of any personal data we hold about you. Given our minimal data collection, we likely hold no personal data linked to you.
  • Right to Rectification (Article 16): You may request correction of any inaccurate personal data.
  • Right to Erasure (Article 17): You may request deletion of your personal data. Since we do not store personal data on our servers, and IlmPath app data resides entirely on your device, you can erase all data by uninstalling the app or clearing your browser data.
  • Right to Data Portability (Article 20): You may request your data in a machine-readable format. As we store no personal data on our servers, there is no server-side data to export.
  • Right to Restriction of Processing (Article 18): You may request that we restrict processing of your personal data in certain circumstances.
  • Right to Object (Article 21): You may object to processing based on legitimate interest. You can opt out of analytics at any time through our consent mechanism.
  • Right to Withdraw Consent: Where processing is based on consent, you may withdraw consent at any time without affecting the lawfulness of prior processing.

Right to Lodge a Complaint

Our servers are located in the United States. When your minimal data (timezone, Smart Search queries) is transmitted, it is transferred to the United States. We ensure appropriate safeguards are in place, and all transmissions use HTTPS encryption. The legal basis for this transfer is the necessity of the transfer for the performance of the service you requested.

California Residents (CCPA/CPRA)

If you are a California resident, the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA), as amended by the California Privacy Rights Act (CPRA), provides you with additional rights regarding your personal information.

Categories of Personal Information

In the preceding 12 months, we have collected the following categories of personal information:

  • Internet or other electronic network activity: Anonymous, aggregated website usage data through cookieless analytics (Google Analytics in consent mode). This data cannot identify individual users.
  • Geolocation data: Device timezone string only (e.g., "America/Los_Angeles"), transmitted when fetching daily guidance. Precise location data is stored exclusively on your device and never transmitted to our servers.

We do not collect: real names, email addresses (unless you voluntarily submit via the contact form), Social Security numbers, financial information, biometric data, browsing history, or any other categories of personal information.

How We Use Personal Information

The minimal data described above is used solely to:

  • Provide date-appropriate daily Islamic content (timezone)
  • Return relevant search results (Smart Search queries, which are not stored)
  • Understand general website usage trends (anonymous analytics)

Sale and Sharing of Personal Information

We do not sell your personal information. We have not sold personal information in the preceding 12 months and have no intention of doing so. We do not share personal information for cross-context behavioral advertising. We do not use or disclose sensitive personal information for purposes other than those permitted by the CCPA.

Your CCPA Rights

As a California resident, you have the right to:

  • Right to Know: Request disclosure of the categories and specific pieces of personal information we have collected about you.
  • Right to Delete: Request deletion of your personal information. Since we store no personal data on our servers, uninstalling IlmPath or clearing browser data effectively deletes all data.

  • Right to Opt-Out of Sale: We do not sell personal information, so this right does not apply in practice.
  • Right to Non-Discrimination: We will not discriminate against you for exercising any of your CCPA rights.
